Graves disease is an autoimmune condition where antibodies made from the patient’s body inappropriately stimulate receptors on the thyroid gland, leading to hyperthyroidism, and in the tissue behind the eye, causing the eyes to look rather prominent and stick out (“Graves ophthalmopathy” or “thyroid eye disease”). While medications can be used to control certain aspects of hyperthyroidism, Graves disease that is uncontrolled may require thyroidectomy. Patients with noticeable eye disease, dry eyes, or vision loss are good candidates for orbital decompression. Together with an oculoplastic surgeon, Mount Sinai sinus doctors are able to remove the medial wall of the orbit (eye socket) so that the eye can relax back into its proper place. This minimally invasive approach is performed largely through the nose, and there are no external incisions. It is very effective for solving a Graves disease patient’s eye-related issues when performed early enough.
