Mount Sinai Otolaryngology Surgical Series: Branchial Cleft Cyst Removal

Mount Sinai Otolaryngology Surgical Series: Branchial Cleft Cyst Removal

Branchial cleft cysts are uncommon, congenital neck masses that may present by the angle of the mandible or neck and may form abnormal connections with the ear canal, tonsil, or piriform sinus (throat). They may become repeatedly infected or present as a painless neck mass. Surgical excision is the only way to effectively treat them. Small masses may be removed on an outpatient basis, while larger masses may require a temporary drain and an overnight stay in the hospital.
