The Mount Sinai Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health are widely recognized as leaders in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of workplace injuries and illnesses. Our multidisciplinary health care team provides comprehensive patient-centered services.
Starting over 50 years ago with Dr Irving Selikoff. The Selikoff Centers have been diagnosing, treating and preventing occupational illness and injury. Today, we continue that mission as a member of the New York State Occupational Health Clinic Network and as a clinical center of excellence for the World Trade Center Health Program. Occupational medicine is a specialized field of medicine in which physicians are not only trained in diagnosing and treating. They're also tasked with preventing occupational related injuries and illnesses. Individuals who are injured during the course of employment or who suffer from work related illnesses or diseases required specialized care and our specialists can both treat the patient and improve safety at the work site. I always hear about the fact that the workplace um has a significant effect on their health. Occupational medicine gives you that that platform, that option that you can see both sides of the equation as a health condition and how the workplace environment impact that health condition. A worker can face numerous hazards while they are working. Some of these include exposures to asbestos fibers, diesel fumes, exposures to chemicals and solvents and maybe exposures to lead. They may also suffer from more common injuries such as slips, strips and falls while they're at work and also exposures to noise and heat. We do provide diverse services which includes diagnostic and treatment exams, screening for workplace exposures, works, site assessments and recommendations, economic and industrial hygiene assessments, navigating the workers compensation process and educational presentations here at the Center for, for occupational health. Um We, we try to make it as inclusive and as diverse as possible. So, something that we do is we partner with unions um and community based organizations uh to, to go out into the community kind of let people know what rights they have as workers, make sure that they know that the services here at the clinic are a resource for them and we'll also educate them about occupational health in general. Something else that we do is that partner with employers to assess and reduce risk factors at the work site as well as design comprehensive health and safety programs as a preventive measure for their employees. Many of our outreach folks are excellent guides to those very kind of difficult systems and can help workers get past the emergency room and hospitalization and doctor's offices back to rehabilitation and return to work if they can or uh the best benefits they can uh if they cannot return to work. All of this is very important and all of it requires really specialized knowledge and the willingness to really go to bed for your patient we have on site translators who can translate into Spanish and Polish. And our staff is culturally sensitive and very much aware of the diverse needs of working populations. In, in New York City. It gives me great pride to represent the clinic um and to represent the innovation that Doctor Soloff has created. Um And then we take on that legacy and move forward. Our staff does that every day. It's a source of great joy to me and it helps me fly here.
